Unique go anywhere coastal cruising catamaran design ready to take you away to a new life for as long as you desire. This is a solid quality fibreglass build, easy to handle vessel well suited to coastal cruising. During a recent extended cruise of the Queensland Coast La Rana's features and design provided easy passage, comfortable accommodation and unique experiences on outer barrier reefs, tropical island beaches and secluded coastal anchorages. She is now ready to load up and go again.

Fastback catamarans were designed by John Gross to be capable, responsive and enjoyable sailing vessels and incorporate unique features and functionality to maximise your cruising experience. Limited numbers were built under John's guidance in his Brisbane based factory. La Rana is easy to handle and maintain.

La Rana's design delivers a solid strong fibreglass light displacement vessel which is responsive under sail and economical under engine power. Her sail plan includes a unique roller boom allowing the main sail to be easily furled and reefed by rolling up on the boom and a furling headsail. Beaching keels, a single starboard retractable dagger board and kick up / retractable rudders allow La Rana to comfortably sit on the beach and provide shallow draught to cross fringing reefs and coastal bars.

She is well powered with a reliable low hours ( ~370 hours ) 30 hp Yanmar diesel connected via a Yanmar SD20 Sail Drive to an extended retractable drive leg. Both the engine and sail drive are centrally mounted well above the waterline and when raised the leg is out of the water. This configuration along with the integrated through hull design is very low maintenance as when the leg is raised there are no metals in contact with the water (no corrosion/electrolysis/fouling), no sail drive water seal, all drive components can be inspected/accessed while in the water and if required the vessel can be beached for anti fouling or maintenance. The single above water centre mounted engine is easily accessed through a double cockpit hatch resulting in reduced servicing expenses. Overall a very low cost and easy to maintain vessel.

The bridgedeck cabin has a slide back roof and excellent all round views while sailing or relaxing and can be fully opened to the cockpit area. It includes an extendable 4-6 person dining table which can be converted to a single or double berth. The central steering position can be fully enclosed or open, you have good all round line of sight, and are within easy reach of sheets and winches.

The starboard side has a double berth, navigation/chart table and large bathroom, shower and toilet. The port side has a double berth, galley, and another large and comfortable dinette / or master double berth.

Both hulls have extensive storage in side cabinets and shelving and large volume forward storage. A port forward deck locker incorporates multi bottle gas storage with copper piping to the galley. A starboard forward deck locker includes anchor chain, second anchor and the house battery compartment. There is also a forward centre locker with weatherproof air vents directly to the port and starboard midship double berths.

The forward deck is expansive and provides an excellent relaxation platform. The deck can be well shaded with the full canvas shade over the timber spinnaker pole. The forward deck also incorporates inbuilt water collection piped via flush valves to port and starboard water tanks. While the well designed 12 volt solar charge control system matched with efficient iceer 12 volt refrigeration provides capacity for continuous off grid onboard living.
